International Day for Girl Child is observed on 11th October of every year with a view of empowering girls as well as creating awareness about their situations all over the world. This special day brings attention to issues such as equality, education, and protection of the girl child worldwide. For girls, to get support they should be assisted because as much as we would like to believe each person counts a girl is significant to a strong and prosperous society.
To date, the United Nations designated this day to work on problems, such as education, health, and security of girls 2012. Many improvements have been made, but there are girls today who have challenges getting a quality education or seeking medical help let alone being safe at home or in school. The day is aimed at raising awareness on these problems and at the same time informing everyone that girls are capable of transforming the world.
Purpose of the International Day of the Girl Child
There is more than a celebration on this day; it also serves as a reminder of the plight of people out there. Here are some important reasons why International Day of the Girl Child is essential:
Promoting Education for Girls
Education has a very strong impact on the improvement of girl’s status in society. Unfortunately, millions of girls throughout the world still cannot attend school because of poverty, tradition, or lack of schools. Girls’ education is important so that they can get employed, get better lives, and in the process, help improve their societies.
Equality of Women /Rights and Opportunities
This day beseeches for girls what boys should gain in this specific area. If it is in learning, games, or our future jobs, then gender equity has to be the order of the day. Equal rights mean that males and females should receive the same quality treatment in any aspect of life leading to a just society.
Health and Safety
Every girl out there must feel secure either in her own home, at school, or anywhere she may be. Adolescent girls are facing challenges such as early marriage, gender-based violence, and poor health that impact one, two, or all of these ten million girls globally. Through awareness creation, the International Day of the Girl Child seeks to guarantee that the girl child has the opportunity to enjoy a healthy childhood.

Materials Needed:
Large sheets of paper
Pencils
Crayons such as blue, red, Black, and green and markers.

Instructions:
Start the session by explaining what the International Day of the Girl Child is to the class. Discuss how girls can grow up to be anything they want to be – a doctor, a teacher, a scientist, or even an astronaut.
It is safe to request each child to make a picture showing what one believes he or she will be in the future. You should motivate them to think outside the box and ideas should not be bound by size!
The sketches made by them, rewrite what they wanted to be, or help them write what kind of occupation they wanted and how they would change the world. For example, the following ones: ‘I will be a doctor and help people to avoid getting sick.’
Post the drawings on the classroom wall to show everyone an empowering gallery of future leaders!
This activity is entertaining and may provide kids with ideas about their future during the International Day of the Girl Child.
Conclusion
The day chosen to celebrate is the ‘The International Day of the Girl Child’ which takes place on 11th October every year intending to focus on gender equality/ vaccines for girls. It is the objective of the Girl Effect to allow girls to go to school defend themselves and receive equal opportunities to succeed in their dreams and improve the world. Whether it is a call to end child abuse or schools from around the world coming up with simple activities like ‘no squeeze, squeeze my hand’, it’s a day to make things happen and ensure that the girlchild grows up to be healthy and confident individuals, ready to stand up and take on the world.
Empowering girls promotes the betterment of everyone’s future and the existence of this special day is a sign that it is carried out.
